We have a bed….no bedroom…but at least we have a bed

There was a queen sized bed advertised in the Cape Ads so off Wouter and I went with the Yellow Thing (trusty landrover) to see if we liked it. The base doesn’t have feet, but Wouter reckons he can either build in drawers or make feet for it.  It’s a very solid pine base with what looks like a reasonably decent mattress. Fortunately the woman selling it had two chaps working for her – otherwise we’d have battled to get it up the stairs and onto the roof.  As it was we had to enlist the help of my father to get it off the landrover back home.

At home

We also chose the exterior paint for the house, armed with my photograph and a vague idea of what I wanted (Wouter told me the colour choice was up to me – when I moaned at him for not taking more of an interest, and said I was panicking about making the wrong decision, he went ‘welcome to my world’.  Some things are just more important to each of us than others :)). We went to Builders Warehouse where a very helpful chap told us what we should be doing and what type of paint we need.  I hate the green on the house…

View of the house

and if we’re going to change that well then the white must go as well.  The house would need a new coat of paint whatever we did, so I figure change the green to a rusty red (roof red according to the chap) and the walls to a cream (flamenco) which would then complement the brown of the veranda and fence (I hope). Of course this does mean that the wall around the house needs painting as well.  Wouter said he’d get them to start painting today as he needs to keep the team busy whilst he catches up on the things *he* needs to do.  They have already painted primer on the garage, when I asked Jessica if she noticed the difference she goes ‘wasn’t it always white?’  *sigh* kids.

Remember the lowered ceiling in the lounge?

Here’s what it looks like now, a huge difference!

The weather turned into one of those beautiful pre-winter days and I couldn’t resist taking a shot of our view from the veranda, I suspect we’ll be spending a lot of time sitting on our veranda on days like this.

And one last picture for today – the garage, which is looking more and more like a garage every day.  If you look in the upper corner you can see the garden light I was talking about a few posts back.

Weekend highlights…

“But, I’ve never come first before, Mom” was Tamsyn’s refrain when I chided her ever so gently for her rather loud excited chatter as we left the Braun (her club)  Inter-Club Gymnastics competition on Saturday.  “You can be as excited as you like in the car” I kept saying to her.  Do I sound a little harsh?  Maybe, but all around her were rather miserable gymnasts and I suspect her yelling at the top of her voice “I still can’t believe it!!” wasn’t exactly helping their mood.  Of course on here we can brag all we like :)

So here goes……

Tied first on floor with 9.20

First on vault with 9.00

First on beam with 9.30

(We’re not talking about bar…. issues still remain to be resolved, we hope by her coach finding out what the hell she’s teaching them that is wrong).

First overall with an average of 8.825

 First overall

That’s my girl :)

Rosettes

Full of pride

So proud :)

Of course readers might be fooled into thinking I have only the one daughter because Jessica never seems to feature on here.  “I don’t want my photo taken”, “Get that camera out of my face”, “Geez Mom, leave me alone!”

 No photos!

She’s 12 going on 24, I’m sure I need say no more.  (I will say though, she is beautiful and growing up to be a lovely young woman – now if I could just get her to come out of her room or clean it!)

Where does the time go?

Life has a habit of getting in the way of doing things, reason why I haven’t updated the blog in awhile is because of life.  You know, the general run of the mill stuff that happens and before you know it – a week or so has gone by and  you realise not only have you not updated your blog, but you haven’t even been to the house to monitor the progress.  I truly envy people who seem to be able to fit so much into a day – either they have way more energy than me or they’re just better at organising their lives.  When I got divorced I bought a book Idiots Guide to Time Management (comes from being told on numerous occassions that I can’t manage time) – haven’t read it yet.

Anyhow, I’m still seriously chuffed with the ceiling in the lounge – it has made a huge difference to the appearance of the house. I’m eagerly awaiting the tiling of T’s bathroom and looking forward to the kitchen taking shape.

On a totally different note, why is it that people find it odd that I went back to my maiden name when I re-married?  Case in point – took J’s enrolment forms for High School to the school – well attempted to at any rate.  Very friendly lady went through them with me and when she noticed that mother and father live at different addresses asked the logical question – ‘So, you’re divorced then?’ to which I reply ‘Yes, but I’ve since remarried’   ‘Ah’ she goes ‘and your new surname would be…’ whilst rifling through the papers to find the copy of my ID book.

‘I went back to my maiden name.’

‘Oh.’     silence

‘I’ve attached a copy of the marriage certificate as well as the rates bill so that you can see the connection’  (House is registered in W’s name).

‘Oh.’   silence…   ‘Let me just go and check with the bursar if that is ok.’

My turn to go ‘oh’.

After some time she comes back to say that is fine, almost as if they’re giving me permission to take my maiden name again (hello!) …. still wouldn’t accept the forms though because the father hasn’t signed them yet.  I did explain that he was at sea, that he had sent an email to explain, but nope that wouldn’t suffice.  She did however assure me that waiting for the signature wouldn’t jeapardise J’s chances of getting into the school.

 The mind boggles sometimes.

Reminds me of a line from a song…. “This is a man’s world“   *grumble*

All’s well that ends well…

Tamsyn participated in an inter-club gymnastics competition on Saturday, hosted by ACS at Edgemead Primary School.  Poor kid though had an awful competition, started out badly with her performing first on the bar and getting a score of 7.10 – to put the score into perspective, it is the lowest she’s ever got, kids who fell off the bar were getting higher marks than her .  We’re still not entirely sure what she did wrong, even her coach was dumbfounded and had an argument with the Judges, not that that swayed them in any way.  She then fell off the beam (despite that she still managed to get 8.00) and when it came time for the handing over of the medals, her name was left out completely.  Her team mate who got the same score as her (8.95) in floor was called up for third place, but poor Tamsyn was left hanging.  Fortunately her coach pointed out the announcer’s error and Tamsyn got to stand on the podium all on her lonesome.  Did mean we got a really nice picture out of it though, so all’s well that ends well :).

There’s a hole in our ceiling, dear Tanya, dear Tanya

I arrived at the house on Saturday morning to have a quick look around to see how Frank and his team were getting on, to discover a hole in the ceiling of the kitchen. Frank had fallen through the day before, he didn’t seem any worse off and cheerfully told me, whilst up a ladder plastering the lounge wall, that he was fine (will post pics tomorrow, seems I’ve forgotten my camera lead, again).  It is a bit of a shock to the system to see a gaping hole in ones ceiling, which wasn’t intentionally made, but we are very pleased that Frank didn’t hurt himself.

Quick update on the weekend’s activities and house progress.  We went tile shopping on Sunday to find tiles for the kitchen, T’s bathroom and to suss out potential hopefuls in the bid for pride of place in our bathroom.  Having been assured by both Wouter *and* the salesman at CTM that I only need a nominal amount of ‘spotters’ in the bathroom I acquiesced and opted for 3 instead of the 10 I originally suggested (in my defence, 10 was a thumbsuck and suggested in the spur of the moment, having been placed under pressure by the question ‘So, how many of the patterened tiles do you think you’ll need?’ – I didn’t have a frigging clue!).  I actually can’t wait to see how T’s bathroom is going to look, ‘cos the tiles we’ve (ok, mainly me) picked are beautiful.  We found a suitable tile for the kitchen as well, fairly plain, one of those ‘goes with anything’ kind of tiles.  Now the tricky bit is going to be deciding what colour the counters should be.  I did spot a beautiful border tile for our bathroom, which we have noted – as we don’t know how much space is going to be tiled, it reallly didn’t make much sense to buy any now.  T and I had fun , carrying sample tiles around the show room and holding them up against other tiles, baths, basins (pretty much anything we could lay our hands on) to see if they matched.  I want to go for a pale green theme in our bathroom picking up the colour of our glass basin we’ve bought.

Once we’d exhausted the salesman and ourselves it was on to light fitting shopping. Being a Sunday our choice of shops was limited but we did manage to find two really cute chandeliers for J and T’s rooms. (Not what we’d originally gone out to find, but one has to carpe diem sometimes – not so sure W would agree with me :)).  It has been J’s dream to have a chandelier in her bedroom, and now not only does she have one, but it is black as well! (very fitting for a wannabe/sortabe Goth gal).  I saw a gorgeous fitting which I believe will look stunning above my bath, but we’ll have to wait a bit for that one (pretty much ‘we’re not there yet’ kind of thing).

On the house structure side of things, the lowered ceiling in the lounge is a thing of the past and we should be putting in ceiling boards soon.  I believe that removing it has really made a difference and opened up the lounge a lot, one doesn’t get that claustrophobic feeling any more.  T’s bathroom is ready to be tiled and fitted out, the bath is sitting in J’s room at the moment. The kitchen needs a new celing board (still can’t quite get over that one), but W knows more about the structural side of things.

Camera play…..

The other day I took photos (at the Scrapbook convention) and they really didn’t turn out well at all.  Was most disapointed, so I asked Wouter to check the camera settings just in case I’d managed to screw them up again.

A picture Wouter took of some flowers I bought for the garden (he was checking the camera settings, I’m just bragging about my first flower).

My first flowers

So yesterday whilst I was waiting for T to finish gymnastics I decided to play with the camera, quite like the results.  The squirrel pic was taken through the front windscreen.

Loot… oh goodie!

I’d convinced (well actually bribed/cajoled and otherwise begged)  Wouter to give me an early birthday present, a ticket to the Cape Town Scrapbook Convention being held at Spier…. {way early if you consider my birthday is only in August, but be that as it may} . Registration was at 7:00 so I was up really early to get there in time, made it with a minute to spare, not bad considering it was dark the whole way and I managed to take a small wrong turn round the circle in Muizenberg. (It takes a certain talent to be completely directionless).  The convention was great, we had international celebrities, very generous sponsored gifts and giveaways, as well as excellent food provided by Spier.

The opening of the convention by Louise Eichner  Louise Eichner opened the convention and we were soon stuck into making cards, getting to grips with acrylic stamps as well as creating beautiful scrapbook pages.  Was enormous fun :)

Adrienne and Amy Kennedy  Amy and Adrienne Kennedy a mother and daughter team who create the most wonderful acrylic stamps and started the company My Sentiments Exactly in America in 2000 showed us how quick and easy it is to make unique hand made cards in a matter of minutes.  Adrienne promised to post on her blog a short clip of all of us hard at work.

We also had classes by Heidi Swapp (very well known in the industry) as well as a colleague of hers, Janet Hopkins.

Of course I had to sort out my loot when I got home!

We have a hole!

That’s right – Frank and his team have broken through the wall in the kitchen – I reckon it looks awesome, of course we’re a long way from it looking like anything other than a hole in the wall, still in my humble estimation.. it’s a damn fine looking hole.

View from front door  View from lounge  Wall broken through…  View from kitchen through to lounge

We’ve also broken through the new kitchen door and master bedroom door.

Tamsyn’s bathroom has been completely gutted and is now waiting for the sanitary ware as well as tiles. Course we haven’t actually picked any tiles yet, so that is fast becoming a priority.

We managed to get to two moving-on sales over the weekend, the first Wouter went to, ostensibly to try and score some bedroom cupboards – apparently it was chaos, so all he came away with was a door, which considering the price of doors these days, isn’t bad going. (It is on the list of things we need). Sunday, Tamsyn and I joined him at the second one and managed to get everything we wanted, and some extra.  Tamsyn is rather good at surreptitiously creeping to the front and then racing up the stairs and throwing herself on the things we want. She did tell me one lady tried to get past her but she wasn’t budging!  She’s competitive at the best of times, these sales just bring out the worst (best?) in her.  Reckon we’ll take her along again :-).  I’ll upload a pic some other time of the garden lamp we bought, I once again fell in love with something we hadn’t really gone for (oh and we picked up a few delapidated pc’s as well) … not on the list, but Wouter assures me we need them.

But, they have to be made Mommy…

Words to strike fear into the heart of even the bravest of Moms, alright perhaps only the domestically challenged brave Moms, or in this case, perhaps just me.  Class cake sale at school – something I have gone through with my eldest and always managed to get away with buying cookies, or biscuits or putting popcorn into little bags.  Not this time though, with big eyes my youngest looks at me and says those fateful words “you’ve never made me anything to take to school to sell for cake sale”. Naturally mom-guilt kicks in and I start to frantically think how I can make 33 somethings which takes the least amount of cooking/baking skills and still passes the ‘My Mommy made these’ proud tone.

They took us about an hour and a half to make, aren’t exactly the neatest or most creative cake sale goodies in the world, but T is very happy and you know, I’m kind of proud of them too.

Well, it’s a start…

This past weekend we went shopping, primarily for bathroom hardware - toilet, basin and the like.  Sometimes it really does pay to shop around, we went into several bathroom type stores and had a look around, made the mistake of innocently asking the price of what appeared to be an ordinary toilet.  Salesman “Two-two”, initial thought… hmmm two hundred and twenty rand, that sounds a little low, but surely he doesn’t mean two thousand and twenty rand.  Sadly he did.  Two thousand odd rand to sit on a small whilte hole!  Ridiculous if you ask me, anyway we went to Brights and found an equally nice looking toilet for R495.00.

      Toilet          Toilet

Toilet and shower tray in their positions in the master bathroom – the box is impersonating a wall – (the shower tray has been living in the roof in Bellville for sometime now)

Our Malawian team (Frank and his team) have also started and did a fabulous job in breaking up the concrete stoep outside the kitchen and down the side of the house.

stoep.jpg  stoep-1.jpg  stoep-2.jpg  stoep-3.jpg

We also had to shift Wouter’s computer terminal (that desk is damn heavy, let me tell you) to the garage as he wants to get Frank and his team to start breaking down walls inside the house.

New home  PC Desk’s new home in the corner of the garage

Wouter wanted to see how thick the wall of the kitchen was and also mark out where we would be breaking through – turned out to be hard work.

kitchen-wall.jpg  Finally broke through the wall kitchen-wall-1.jpg

Slightly off topic, I had to take a picture of our lone tomato plant tomato.jpg, which I might add we’ve had 3 tomatoes from already (they tasted really nice).  Not being much of a gardner, ok not being a gardner at all, I’m really very proud of this tomato plant.  The fact that the previous owners planted it, is really besides the point. It is *my* plant now, erm *our* plant now!
